In June Gordon visited the Stephen Kanji
School, in the Shimba Hills, Mombasa. He was made very welcome by Daniel the Headmaster who was pleased to show him the progress on the water storage tank. It is now over 18 months since Sallys Childrens Trust first
planned the logistics of the school water project with the assistance of Camps International. Work began in April 2007 and now June 2008 the first water storage tank has been completed. The tank is 40 ft diameter and
10 ft in height and will hold 120,000 litres of water. During the last year one of the classroom blocks has been revamped with a completely new roof, and extended veranda, guttering and connecting pipework to the tank has
been installed. The monsoon season commenced prior to Gordon’s arrival and the tank was almost completely full. The school is now responsible for keeping control of the water usage and keeping the system flushed clear
of any debris.
From the picture you will see the steps leading down to the water tap; here the children take a bucket full of water to
each classroom for distribution. The water is suitable to drink and this will mean that many of the children will now
be less likely to suffer from stomach cramps and illness. Here in the UK we take water for granted but it is a very
valued commodity in Africa, especially at the Stephen Kanji school, which is located on top of a hill in the heart of the Shimba Hills.
