Ansante Sana  (Swahili for thank you) !!  -   THANK YOU FOR OUR WATER

In June Gordon visited the Stephen Kanji School, in the Shimba Hills, Mombasa. He was made very welcome by Daniel the Headmaster who was pleased to show him the progress on the water storage tank. It is now over 18 months since Sallys Childrens Trust first planned the logistics of the school water project with the assistance of Camps International.  Work began in April 2007 and now June 2008 the first water storage tank has been completed. The tank is 40 ft diameter and 10 ft in height and will hold 120,000 litres of water. During the last year one of the classroom blocks has been revamped with a completely new roof, and extended veranda, guttering and connecting pipework to the tank has been installed. The monsoon season commenced prior to Gordon’s arrival and the tank was almost completely full. The school is now responsible for keeping control of the water usage and keeping the system flushed clear of any debris.

Water tank tap
From the picture you will see the steps leading down to the water tap; here the children take a bucket full of water to each classroom for distribution. The water is suitable to drink and this will mean that many of the children will now be less likely to suffer from stomach cramps and illness.  Here in the UK we take water for granted but it is a very valued commodity in Africa, especially at the Stephen Kanji school, which is located on top of a hill in the heart of the Shimba
Hills.

In these pictures you can see the new roof, guttering and pipes that feed down into the water storage tank. There is still work to be carried out on a large classroom block on the opposite side where a new roof and guttering will feed into some additional tanks. This is scheduled during the forthcoming summer school holidays

Gordon went with Daniel, the Headmaster, to the local ‘schools’ book store and on Daniel’s recommendation he purchased a variety of text books that the school had an urgent need for. The Head was delighted as it would to help to make a great impact on their ability to provide the children with the resources they required. These cover subjects such as Swahili, Science, Social Studies, Composition, English and Mathematics to a very good level.  Previously there had been a limited selection of old and different individual text books on the various subjects making teaching difficult for the teacher and pupil.

Books

In each text book we have pasted a sticker to remember Sally. On these are written names of family, friends, churches, schools and work colleagues in fact everyone who has enabled us to fulfill Sally’s promise - especially to the children at the Stephen Kanji School in the Shimba Hills - her love and hope to them for a better future.
